In September 1996 I was visiting New York for the first time in my life, one night I was walking around the block where I was staying, heading nowhere, when I heard some good music and spotted a place which sounded interesting.

Was the now defunct Manny’s Car Wash, which was not actually a car wash at all, but in fact the best place to hear Blues in the big apple.

I was sitting on a stool, listening to great live music and having a drink when I had one of the funniest and sweetest gift ever.

The man behind me tapped on my shoulder and asked me to watch his glass and his seat while he was going to the toilet. I kept repeating myself “Oh my god! He is Lou Reed!”

Legendary Lou ReedYep, I once met Lou Reed, I didn’t much with him a part from watching his seat while he was peeing and having him teach me about tipping the bartender more to get my orders faster. But I am happy I had the opportunity to shake hands and tell him how much I loved his music.

Legendary Lou Reed, 71, died today.
